Press Freedom Defense Fund Statement on the Arrest of Julian Assange
In response to the arrest of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange in London, and his indictment in the United States, First Look Media’s Press Freedom Defense Fund has issued the following statement:
The Press Freedom Defense Fund calls on the United States government to protect the First Amendment and the freedom of the press in America in its handling of the case of Julian Assange.
Assange has been charged with conspiracy to commit computer intrusion. This case must not be used as a precedent by the Trump Administration as a means to prosecute journalists for publishing classified information in the future. This arcane anti-hacking case must never be allowed to create a British-style Official Secrets Act in the United States. The ability of the American press to hold the government accountable is at stake.
